This post can either be called really late or slightly early. Either way, let’s just say timing isn’t my strong point…(>.<)
My birthday is next week (eeee!), so as a surprise my friend organised for us to see Janelle Monáe live last Thursday. This was just the best surprise ever, as she is my favourite music artist at the moment, and is just awesome. (If you haven’t heard her yet, watch this. Then prepare to be in love ♥)
As with most surprises, this one came at short notice so my immediate thought was ‘What to wear?!‘ I did start making a simple shift dress with leopard print collar, but I was rushing and things were not going my way, so that idea was abandoned and I just stuck to the collar. Making a detachable collar has been on my mind for a while so I am pleased this idea finally came to life.
Actually it was so easy, this was finished in less than an hour (including making the pattern). I wore it over my gingham shift dress and the two patterns worked really well together, but it also works with many other pieces in my wardrobe – basically anything with a high neckline. I loved this collar so much, already there are more pattern pieces cut out waiting to be assembled. My peter pan collar obsession has reached new heights!

That collar is so cute! I hope you have a great birthday! x
Thank you Raylan!!
I love detachable collars too! I’ve always loved the idea of a sweet lace one, but yours is very awesome!
wonderfully done lady…also i love janelle’s shoes in the video!i saw the most awesome pair of read and cream heavy brogues today…but i’d take janelles black and white ones any day
This is a pretty fabric and a great idea. So versatile !
Cute collar – I’ve been meaning to make one of these for ages. And thanks for the link to that video – I LOVE IT!!
Thanks!
Yes, isn’t the video amazing?! The ‘Many Moons’ one is also really great.
Happy Birthday!
Love it! You did great with the drafting, I’d love to get my hands on some of your patterns. The print is excellent and really looks like it’d be very versatile and useable in many outfits and occasions! Great Job :)
P.S….is it really your birthday? Just in case…Happy Birthday to you, You’re crafty as can be…you sew like a genius that’s inspiring to me. (Thanks for your amazing blog!)
Wow Anna! That’s so cute, thank you!!
Thanks for being a great reader ^-^
You saw Janelle Monae?! Wow, was she incredible? ^_^
Yes. I can safely say she was awesome.
What a performer! There was crazy dancing, sleeping on the stage (which the audience had to mimic), and lots of confetti. LOVE her *.*
This is lovely! It’s a little cute spice on daily outfit! I want one now!
First of all, you must share a tutorial of how to make a detachable collar and secondly, I am also a fan of Janelle Monae. Love her voice. Especially in Cold War.
Firstly wishing you a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! and secondly please please PLEASE will you write us all a tutorial on how to make a detachable collar> I have longed to make one for ages but have no idea where to start and I rekon it might just be a sewing project I could complete without stitching myself together!! xxxx
p.s. Thirdly can you let me know where the huge discount fabric shop where you got your liberty print material from is or just generally good shops to buy material that doesn’t cost a small fortune??!!
Hi Valerie, sorry for the late reply!
Thank you so much for you birthday wishes! With the collar..all I can say is keep an eye open ;) Fabric is quite a difficult one, because it can vary in price and quality so much from place to place. There are a few large (and fairly cheap) fabric stores near me…I don’t know where you are based so this may not help! Plus, the stock changes constantly and sometimes there is only upholstery fabric :(
I would suggest looking in charity shops – they are magic! Duvets and ‘fabric scraps’ are usually very reasonable and can last for several projects. Alternatively, get on the web – eBay and Etsy often have pretty cottons and more for good prices..good luck and I hope this helps a bit! Don’t forget to ask people as well, sometimes the least likely person knows all the best places ;)
You look so cute!! The collar highlights your cheekbones, somehow! :) Thanks so much for this!
I would also like to make such a lovely collar.
How is a pattern made?
Ooh I love this.. I’m now kinda obsessed with collars myself!
